A research record, like a note card, records an observation and maybe an interpretation. Be sure to include a link to what you found so your steps can be retraced by others.
Title: How much value does this school add compared to similar students statewide?

Where can I find this resource?
This comparison graph is located on the "Using Information" page that is linked to each school's information page which can be accessed on the Information that Works website. Once you choose a specific school, the "Using Information" link location is shown here:
Why might this be useful for us?
It is often difficult to compare a particular school with other schools in the state. One complication is that the populations at different schools can be very different. Some of these characteristics, such as the number of students living in poverty, can have a dramatic impact on a school's overall performance.
The value-added measure tries to answer the question "Given its unique population, how does this school in terms of how much its students are learning?" The graph below show this comparison.
In this graph, the school's performance in each performance area is shown as a small circle. The rectangular band indicates the performance of similar students statewide.
“Value-added” allows us to determine whether a particular school adds more value, or improves the child’s skill set more effectively, than other schools. For more than 40 years, researchers have known that the achievement results of different sets of students, such as those from different schools, vary in association with several specific key factors, including:
Poverty (by far the strongest predictor of student achievement, with the exception of prior achievement)
For example, the value-added graph for South Kingstown is shown below:
This graph indicates that overall, SKHS does slightly better on most of the performance indicators than occurs for similar students in other schools statewide.
Other Notes:
There is a list of Rhode Island schools sorted by their value-added linked to the Information That Works home page. An excerpt of this table showing the top RI schools is below:
